In 1838, Before Mrs. Charles (Catherine) Durkee died, she requested to be buried at one of her favorite spots on the family's property--a lovely knoll south of town. After Catherine's death, Senator Durkee donated several acres of land around his wife's grave to the city for use as a cemetery. This area, which became known as City Cemetery, is at the north end of today's Green Ridge Cemetery.
