La Belle Cemetery, located in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1851. Originally known as Henshall Place, it was the first recorded cemetery in Oconomowoc. The cemetery was later relocated to Walnut Street. In 1864, the Wisconsin Legislature approved the transfer of all bodies from the Walnut Street location to the current La Belle Cemetery grounds.
The land for La Belle Cemetery was donated by Charles Sheldon when the original Oconomowoc Cemetery became overcrowded. The oldest recorded gravestones date back to the early 1800s. Some graves lack headstones and are marked only by small Xs, with no records of who is buried there. Religious crosses are the most common symbols found on the headstones.
Visitors often come to see the two prominent mausoleums belonging to the Kohl and Sheldon families. The cemetery also has a dedicated section for infants and children under six years old. Additionally, there is a section featuring modern headstones made of black marble, adorned with pictures and drawings.
